Solo Show - Brigitte Mulholland, Paris
A Place to Disappear

Central to A Place to Disappear are formative encounters with Paris, a city that has repeatedly marked turning points in Damien Flood's practice. In Flood's first solo show in Paris, he will present a number of new paintings and ceramics that draw inspiration directly from and reflect on the influence Paris has had on his development as an artist.
During a recent trip to Paris in January, Flood revisited Père Lachaise and encountered a series of mourning women memorials. Further investigation revealed that these figures are known as mournful muses. This encounter sparked the creation of a series of ceramic figures inspired by the sketches and images from his visit. In the exhibition, these figures can be seen to mourn the loss of a painted world, lamenting the promise of painting.
The paintings inspired by this experience view the cemetery as a site of contemplation. They reflect on its layered histories, weathered monuments, and organic encroachments, which are reinterpreted into richly treated surfaces that emphasise the material presence of paint. Each painting is approached uniquely, with visible fragments of certainty merging and disappearing into the raw canvas and hessian. Multiple materials are employed to evoke a weathered and textured surface.
This exhibition will be accompanied by an A5 screen-printed publication titled ‘A Painter and Paris’. It has been printed by Small Night Zine and is limited to 40 copies and will be available at the gallery for the duration of the show. Unmade Painting - Call Out
James Merrigan and I are working on a new project title Unmade Painting, and we would like to invite any interested painters to participate. We are interested in what painting has become in a digital world that further commodifies its already commodified status in the artworld. Can language still sit beside painting without the proclamation of “Too many words” extolled by the audience.

Unmade Painting, an ancillary project-exhibition, accompanies Damien Flood’s solo exhibition at Green on Red Gallery during Dublin Gallery Weekend, October 2026. Presented in the gallery’s Concrete basement space, it operates as both a legacy project and a speculative prompt to question the contemporary condition of painting.
For over twenty years Flood and James Merrigan have sustained a conversation around painting, bringing unwieldy language into the frame of unwieldy painting. That dialogue has taken many forms: Flood’s steady proliferation of printed publications accompanying exhibitions since 2010; and an unrealised film project (2016–18) in which Flood and Merrigan (with two filmmakers Saskia Vermeulen and Gareth Nolan) interviewed Irish painters, asking why they continue to paint. The footage, never resolved, left dormant on a hard drive, becomes here a point of return and screen-printed image.
Where Flood remained committed to painting both materially and conceptually within the commercial system, Merrigan drifted toward language, criticism, and the DIY art publishing framework of Small Night Projects. Unmade Painting brings these trajectories back into contact.
The exhibition will assemble screenprinted elements that awkwardly approximate painting: posters of legacy publications generated by Flood’s invitations to writers and critics; screenshots from the unmade film; and a new screenprinted zine, Tennis, which tackles painting’s relationship to its verbalisation and contemporary digital representation: philosophically, socially, theoretically.
The objective is simple and direct: To ask what painting has become in a digital world that further commodifies its already commodified status in the artworld. Can language still sit beside painting without the proclamation of “Too many words” extolled by the audience. As Flood said in a recent Zoom with Merrigan: painters' noses were once forced towards the grindstone of theory. Today, against the backlit screens of our habitual vigil of the painting that is not the painting, what if the grindstone of theory reappeared in the basement of its exile. Not as a pedagogical learning outcome, but as a sign, a tool, to sharpen our conceptual relationship with material painting.

Earthly Delights is in the title of Hieronymous Bosch's early 16th Century triptych The Garden of Eathly Delights. This painting charts the Creation, the Birth and Fall of man and woman. It was painted in The Netherlands in the 1490s or early 1500s. It is currently in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. It has captivated audiences and artists since that time, including some Irish artists and one or two in this show.
The Garden theme is also continued in Green On Red Gallery's summer Earthly Delights exhibition looking at artists whose work looks at life and death and society, not to mention a world in crisis.

Art Brussels Solo Presentation
Green On Red Gallery is delighted to present a new solo presentation of work by Damien Flood at Art Brussels 2025.
This exhibition of new paintings follows a show that began at Green On Red Gallery in Dublin. His seventh solo exhibition with the gallery, titled As Above, so Below ( 6 February – 11 April 2025 ), marked another step in his ongoing exploration of the history and materiality of painting.
Culture is born of civilization, a tool to question the world around us. Art can bring us closer to understanding reality. This has been a core concern in Flood’s work since the outset. Using abstract and representational painting and sculpture is, for him, a way to dissect and upend the world, showing us a way to look afresh. Eternal Garden is an installation showcasing new works that continue to delve into themes of death, rebirth, and belief. The exhibition and live installation will feature a series of framed, oil and mixed media on canvas paintings and evolving wall paintings that push Flood's boundaries further. Images in glazed and painted ceramic and protruding canvas populate the surface of the paintings.
The exhibition is set within an installation of watercolour botanical drawings made directly and live on the booth walls. They are inspired by the enigmatic Voynich Manuscript. These drawings sprout white ceramic foliage from the gallery walls. Throughout the duration of the art fair, the artist will progressively add more watercolour botanical drawings to the booth, gradually enveloping the space.

Solo Show -Green On Red Gallery
Green On Red Gallery is pleased to present 'As Above, So Below', the 7th solo show by Damien Flood at the gallery.
This exhibition sees the artist further explore his interest in the history and materiality of painting. Culture is born of civilization, a tool to question the world around us. Art when used correctly can bring us closer to understanding reality. This has been a core concern in Flood’s work. Using the language of abstract and representational painting as a way to dissect and upend the world, shows us a way to look anew.
Flood has always been interested in image making, how images are read and what certain shapes and applications of paint can suggest and mean. Over the last few years ceramics have been added to this mix, creating definite moments in the exhibition space. In Floods new solo show these moments have been fused to the canvas plane. Certain works sprout ceramic foliage while fabric theatrically flows and twists through the canvas plane. The white ceramic foliage also alludes to the plants atrophying in the air once they have left the two-dimensional plane. The paintings appear weathered and beaten, with fractured paint language scattered across their surfaces.
Some works feature Flood’s interpretation of the artists frame sewn together from scraps of linen and tacked to the edges, a canvas framing a canvas. Other works see Flood pulling raw linen through a hessian canvas plane or attaching old weather bits of canvas to the surface of the work. These works push his painting language in new directions. The paintings reward slow viewing. The ceramic foliage hides small gold hands, the paint reveals dashes of surprising colour, texture and application.

Group Show at Green On Red Gallery, Dublin
Tom Hunter's Lover Set on Fire in Bed ( 2004 ) from the gallery's archive is the starting point for the exhibition Lovers at Green On Red Gallery, opening Thursday, 15 February 2024. The exhibition will continue until Friday, 8 March only.
A theme in the exhibition is the pairing of two elements or two protagonists in intense proximity or juxtaposition.

In Damien Flood’s new solo exhibition A Place for Lost Things, he continues to push and poke at the edges and boundaries of painting and image making. A central Question to Flood’s practice is how, in modern times, an artist depicts the world around him.
Over the last three years, ceramics have given Flood a new way of working. Folding in different and more direct meaning into his work. The working process of clay connects further to ideas of the past, digging down to unearth otherworldly artefacts. It also allows the paintings time to breath and follow their own path.
In this new body of work comprising of new paintings and ceramics, Flood presents the viewer with mainly large paintings alongside intimate ceramic works. They fold together elements of various styles, approaches, and techniques. The paintings build a world that is still, paused in the middle of becoming undone. One that is emotive, reflective and asks questions of the viewer. The ceramics pose questions about the role of artifacts and how we culturally deal with the inevitable humorous tinge.
These works are laboured and slow to make rewarding slow viewing. The paintings can be divided into interiors and exteriors. The interiors display anthropomorphic qualities. The lines between what is animate and inanimate are blurred. The exteriors bring new elements of life into Flood’s work.

Green On Red Gallery is excited to announce our return to The Armory Show in September 2023 with new work from Damien Flood, Scott Lyall, Niamh McCann and David OReilly. Booth 224
Working across multiple media and exploring a variety of themes, the artists are united in their ability to disrupt safe and easy readings of social, cultural, and historic signs. Flood interrogates the ontology of painting and sculpture through multi-layered works that oscillate between landscape, figuration, representation and abstraction. Referencing the pixel, Lyall’s colour-wave paintings are formed by mathematical interpolation that generates a unique and potentially infinite bitstream as he questions the informational fetish of the post-digital and their signs. McCann playfully disrupts the world of cultural and historic signs as she upends the systems enabling their meaning. Poetic and political, the signifiers and symbols of hegemonic colonial power are reformed as a tool to question our underlying assumptions. OReilly seeks to disrupt and unsettle our understanding of contemporary cultural systems as he recontextualizes the revolutionary 4004 Intel microchip ( USA, 1971 ), offered as both an artefact and an icon through video and sculpture.
Re-started in 1994 in the Gramercy Hotel by four New York art dealers seeking to support their artists by attracting global attention, The Armory Show has become a groundbreaking cultural moment that is a vital aspect of the New York and American art market. Since 2021 the fair has taken place in the newly expanded Javits Center and continues to link visitors to exhibitors at the fair as well as New York City with global galleries, museums, arts organizations, artists and collectors. Try a Little Tenderness, Group Show at Liminal Gallery, Margate.
Tender moments, tender flesh, tender touch, tender thoughts, tender heart, tender mind; try a little tenderness.
A tender moment is encapsulated in an act of thoughtfulness; a cup of tea at the end of the day, a gift of flowers, a display of love. Tenderness is to give up one's time, attention, precious moments devoted to another. Tenderness is also pain, a moment of fragility, of weakness. It evokes skin which expands, shrinks, multiplies, and shivers to the touch. Skin which is a dying organism, for surely that is what we all are. A tender morsel of meat, deliciously melts in the mouth.
Damien Flood’s work spans painting and sculpture and are recognisably traditional but steeped in surprisingly modern principles. Tender moments are captured, fleeting as if a dream, yet tactile enough for recognition. The experience of a lived experience and the fleeting moments we cherish and cling to.
Exploring these themes in contrasting ways ‘Try a little Tenderness’ brings together the works of three artists whose practice is unified in the attempt to capture these fleeting moments.

Limited Edition Lathe Cut Vinyl Release
As part of Damien Flood's new Solo Show at Green On Red Gallery he is releasing a limited edition lathe cut vinyl.
The limited-edition lathe cut record comprises of three tracks written and performed by the artist going under the moniker of GUT. The record titled ‘For After Ever’ came about during the fracturing time of the pandemic. Many feelings and ghosts from the past resurfaced. Long forgotten personalities thought laid to rest made themselves known. As much as they were unwanted, they did bring with them a curiosity to revisit and reclaim passions of the past. The three tracks are not art and Flood does not consider himself a musician. GUT is a tool, a musical endeavour to examine a time when he made music with friends purely for the love and fun of it. It touches on a time, simultaneously celebrating and grieving the loss of a friend. It examines the fugitive world building nature of writing, recording, and releasing and the desire to share emotions and feelings. It is a different part of Flood’s personality, one that ties into his practice and further develops the humour and melancholic undertone to his work.

Green On Red Gallery is excited to announce an exhibition of new paintings, ceramics and a new limited edition vinyl, For After Ever, by Damien Flood in its Spencer Dock gallery, opening on Thursday, October 20 next and running until November 27, 2022.
Flood continues to make paintings and ceramic works that are seen separately and, in the case of Hanging Garden ( 2022 ), where one medium seems to grow out of or is enmeshed with the other. We are more used to this cross-fertilization with architectural embellishment, like the shrouded life-size sculpted figure in the Pére Lachaise cemetery, Paris ( illustrated in Flood’s 2018 book The Figure in the Carpet – Damien Flood : p.2 ). In Hanging Garden ( oil on linen, ceramic and moss ) sculpture grows out of painting. In Evening Sand ( 2022 ) a live clematis climbs through a trellis-like plinth that supports a landscape hand-painted on a round unique ceramic vase.
Life and death are also intertwined.
These kinds of leaps and transformations are at the heart of Flood’s art. As a title, Dig suggests a deathly or macabre action. And mortality is never far from Flood’s brush. But dig is necessary to grow and his oil on canvases are teeming with abundant life. Even his “ indoor “ Design for a Living Room ( 2022 ) ( oil on reversed black-primed canvas with 22 carat gold leaf ) is full of atmosphere, passing clouds or ice-caps, and a chair sprouting green life, all defying an easy definition or understanding of these works.
His series of richly glazed ceramic heads and popular Grinners hit home harder. They confront the viewer in shiny, unsettling detail with uncomfortable truths about the facts of death and decay. Their material and their form also rhyme with the idea of excavation and digging down through the layers of time compressed beneath the surface, to the ruins of past lives.
This is an exhibition for our times, making us wonder just how much we have progressed and how much – or little – life has changed. The use of fired clay already suggests something classical and pre-historic and funerary. His painted landscapes are vivid interior dream worlds posing more questions than answers. The viewer has to dig deep.
You dig deep, you plant deep.
A dig is also a goad to the viewer, a wound and a provocation. This exhibition will not leave you unmoved but provoke a gut response to Flood’s new, visceral, sights and sounds.
Accompanying the show is a three-track vinyl record in an edition of 30 called For After Ever. Each track is written, composed and performed by GUT ( Damien Flood ). It is lathe-cut and available for purchase at the gallery.

Solo Show TILT Opens May 10th at Royal Hibernian Academy.
RHA Brown and O’hUiginn Gallerie will host TILT, the first institutional solo exhibition of Damien Flood's work, consisting of a new body of paintings and fired and glazed ceramic figures and vases, perched on customised plinths in concrete, brass and steel. The exhibition will run from Monday, 10 May to Saturday, 1 August, 2021.
TILT shows a remarkable cross-fertilisation of ideas and imagery between the sometimes lush, sometimes spare painting on canvas and his new miniature squat figures with wrent expressions aimed directly at the viewer. Colourful glazed urns appear inside and outside the paintings, on an edge between this world and the next, with wit and humour, in the face of the unknown and the shocking uncertainty of our times.
Throughout the exhibition we find a new group of what can best be described as flower paintings, anchoring us in this world. These lush memento mori were made in part after seeing paintings from his deathbed of the same subject ( 1880s ) by Edouard Manet - father of modernism - while Flood was on a residency in the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris, in 2018. Foliage, seascape, gardens and horizon lines give us a footing and a fruitful starting point from which to explore TILT.

James Merrigan invited Damien Flood to talk about his decade of self publishing for his new Thing's Screen Podcast. They discuss Flood's publications over the last 11 years in the run up to his latest publication which will be published to coincide with his solo show at the Royal Hibernian Academy this summer.
So… I went podcasting yesterday… In great hunger and appetite for Damien Flood's exhibition at the RHA Gallery Dublin in the coming months, and the launch of his sixth book, I asked him to chat about the decade-long self-publishing that has accompanied his exhibitions.
During that time Damien has confronted the relationship between "words and things", what Michel Foucault called "the entirely serious title of a problem". On canvas and in books, Damien's independent and stubborn painting project has always created & confronted problems privately (in the studio) & publicly (in the gallery). Proffering free reign to his collaborators, many "things" have happened amidst the "words". Artist Feature Page by Green On Red Gallery
Green On Red Gallery have unveiled their new Artists Feature Page. For the inaugural feature they have chosen the work of Damien Flood. The feature gives an in-depth look at recent developments in his practice in the run up to his solo show Tilt at The Royal Hibernian Academy.
Culturally, decorative, but used for every occasion in life from birth to death, cut flowers in painting – a veritable industry in 17C. Netherlands - are also, of course, intended as a moral jolt, a memento mori. The French call it : “nature morte “. Dead nature. The seed for these paintings was sown during Flood’s discovery while on a Centre Culturel Irlandais - Paris, residency in 2018 of late flower paintings by Edouard Manet. The French master painted the daily flower deliveries like Roses in Champagne Glass ( 1882 ), Tulips and Lilacs in a Crystal Vase ( 1882 ) from his deathbed. Flood paints Blooming Pint Glass ( 2020 ) and Bean Can Oak ( 2020 ) with a grittier realism.

TILT
Solo Show at The Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin

Tilt brings together a new body of work that juxtaposes paintings with a series of new ceramic works.
What has resulted from these two years of research and making is the solo show Tilt. The exhibition juxtaposes the new ceramic work against a series of new paintings. The ceramics sit upon handmade brass, cement, and steel stands, evoking delicate and industrial aesthetics.The heavily layered and sumptuous paintings fold together disparate elements that I have developed over the last 14 years. They are combined to create lush complex works that evoke spaces that flip between internal and external, macro, and micro. Flowers grown from paint feature heavily throughout the exhibition. The large paintings depict places in a permanent state of becoming, places to be inhabited by the viewer. The smaller works depict ethereal gardens or singular plants, recognisable moments in an ever-shifting landscape. A series of vases merge the ceramics with the canvases through their painted surfaces, balancing on thin rusted metal stands, contrasting their beauty, and skewing the exhibition space.
The ceramic works pull on the tension exploiting the transition from the real world to the fragmented world of imagination and memory and the tension between a figurative and abstract language. The series of Crying Men and Grinners tug with dark humour at chords of association with primitive cultures and pagan offerings while juxtaposing the emotional landscape of the paintings.

Remote Joy at Green On Red Gallery
Green On Red Gallery Presents : Remote Joy, our first Online and Gallery exhibition
We invite you to visit our debut online/gallery exhibition, Remote Joy, which will launch on our website at 6 pm tomorrow, May 14th, 2020. See new work by Kirstin Arndt, Alan Butler, Constant Dullaart, Damien Flood, John Graham, Mark Joyce, Caroline McCarthy, Ronan McCrea, Fergus Martin & Aoife Shanahan.

The stimulus to curate and to host Remote Joy is to maintain business, to show that art continues to be created, even in these trying and frightening times. It is to inspire and to provoke thought and pleasure through the continued enjoyment of the art being made by our artists, even in these restricting times, when most of us are working from home and some artists are locked out of their studios.
Remote Joy aims to bring some joy and art right into your homes for the duration of this exhibition where, at the touch of a few buttons, you can see new art that is being made because of or despite the uncertain conditions that prevail globally. In fact, this exhibition shows that in many ways the pandemic Covid-19 can bring us closer together. It can also give us more time to contemplate and to savour the important and challenging things in our lives, including new art.
The exhibition is partly remote. It is partly joyful. It is sometimes both.
In this online show you will find new work by some of the above-listed artists that is visible exclusively on your screen, wherever you are.
You will also find images, including installation views, of a selection of the new artworks that are hanging in the gallery in Spencer Dock and “ opening “ on Thursday, May 14, 2020 until June 27, 2020.

New Ceramics at Volta Basel, 2019

Green On Red Gallery is proud to announce its participation in Volta 15, Basel, Switzerland for the 10th time with four of its gallery artists with the theme of Memory and Desire. They include Alan Butler, Damien Flood, Caroline McCarthy and Xavier Theunis with new work completed for the exhibition at Elsässerstrasse 215, 4056 Basel.
Damien Flood’s earthenware clay ceramic figures are shown in combination with oil on linen paintings from his recent The Figure in the Carpet exhibition at Green On Red, Dublin, in 2018/19. This is not the first time his work has left the wall but it is the most explicit expression to date of the tension the artist likes to exploit in the transition from the real world to the fragmented world of his imagination and memory and the tension between a figurative and an abstract language. Crying Man (2019), Potter (2019), Metal Head (2019) and Moon Vase (2019) show off the artists considerable skill in this new medium. They also tug with dark humour at chords of association with primitive cultures and pagan offerings while echoing the emotional landscape of his oil on linens.
Xavier Theunis’s curiously titled Vue d’Atelier #23 continues his impeccable use of sharply cut adhesive vinyl paper, this time in a rainbow of gently curving, perfectly contiguous strips arranged in 3 equal columns. The vertical columns oscillate and sway adding to the up and down dance of colour. Colours range from fluorescent orange, yellow and pinks to sparkling white, sparkling gold and cerize over a 240 x 180cms expanse creating a luxuriant voluptuousness.
In her trademark understated fashion Caroline McCarthy picks the most modest and unpromising of starting points, the disposable plastic drinking straw - the subject and medium of choice for her first solo show and installation in Green On Red Gallery in 2011 - and performs conceptual summersaults giving the viewer on one level a whimsical composition but on another challenging their very belief system. Together Forever is the title of a new series of exquisite ink and gouache paintings on paper that will also be shown in her forthcoming solo show in Galerie Gisela Clement, Bonn ( opening June 25, 2019 ). The suggestion of permanence and unity is at odds with the bare facts of these trompe l’oeil renderings of a transigent condition or, in the words of the artist “ a dishevelled formalism “. She adds: “ Together Forever is a joyful expression of a hedonistic party, a celebration drunk on colour and excess with no thought for the headache tomorrow “.
Alan Butler’s cyanotypes and deskscapes continue to test and cross the lines between the digital and whatever we define as the real realm. Butler mines that dichotomy in rich of ways employing manual techniques of early photography and painting.
